Default How To Root All Your Favorite Android Devices In One Thread

    HTC G1/Dream (GSM)

    I. Before You Begin

    1. This works on all G1’s and Dreams
    2. YOU MUST DO THIS WHOLE PROCEDURE AND THEN DO THE NEXT ONE ON [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] TO GET FULL ROOT ACCESS!
    II. Downgrade to Cupcake

    1. [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] the Original DreaIMG.nbh and the Original Cupcake update.zip:
[Only the registered members can see the link click here to register][Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]
    2. Plug the phone into your computer via USB. Select Mount by pulling down on the notification bar at the top of the phone’s screen and selecting the USB notification. You should now be able to access the sd card in your phone on your computer.
    3. Now, put the DreamIMG.nbh file and the update.zip (do NOT extract the .zip file, leave it as a .zip file) files that you just downloaded on the root of the SD card (NOT in any folder, just on the sdcard itself).
    4. Unplug the phone and turn it off.
    5. Turn on the phone by holding the Camera button and the End key until the bootloader screen comes up.
    6. Hit the End key to start the update. DO NOT INTERUPT THIS PROCESS.
    7. Once it is done, hit the [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] to restart the phone. You now are on the stock firmware RC29.
    8. Then turn off your phone and turn it back on by holding down Home and Power and keep holding until you get to recovery mode (the ! screen).
    9. In recovery mode, slide out the keyboard and hit Alt L to bring up the menu, then hit Alt S to Apply the update.
    10. Once the phone reboots, go through the normal setup process to get to the home screen.
III. Flash a Custom Recovery Image

    1. On your phone, goto Settings, [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register], and make sure Unknown source is checked ON.
    2. On your phone, goto Settings, SD card and phone storage, and click Unmount SD card.
    3. Then click Format SD card (it should automatically remount after this).
    4. Plug the phone into the compuer via USB, then pull down the notification bar and click on the SD card notification. Then click mount.
    5. Download this APK and the recovery image and save it to your computer:
[Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]
[Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]
    6. Once they are saved to your computer, copy them both to your SD card (do NOT put them inside any folders on the SD card, just put them on the SD card itself).
    7. Unplug the phone from the computer once they are downloaded to the SD card.
    8. Goto the Market and download Linda [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] or any file manager program if you do not already have one.
    9. Open the file manager and goto SDCard and then find the FlashRec apk file and click it. If asked tell it to use Package Installer to open it. It should automatically install the apk.
    10. Open the FlashRec program and click on [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] Image and wait for it to finish.
    11. Once done, click on the empty text box in the FlashRec program and type:
    /sdcard/recovery.img
Then click on the Flash Custom RecoveryImage button and wait for it to finish.
    12. Turn off the phone and turn it on into Recovery mode by holding down Home and Power to turn it on (keep holding until the recovery screen comes up has a bunch of text on a black background). So long as that screen comes up, LEAVE IT ON THAT SCREEN, you have done it correctly and can now go on to the How to Load a ROM video for your appropriate device!
[Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]
    13. To get Root access you MUST go to the next video mentioned above and load a custom ROM.
    Reported Issues

Issue: G1’s are erasing the recovery image before we can load a Radio, SPL, or ROM.
Solution: Once you do step 12 and boot into recovery mode, go straight to the next video, leave the phone in recovery mode, and do Section II to load the SPL. If you turn the phone off and on before then you will have to redo these steps.
Issue: I get Invalid Recovery Image or Flash Recovery doesn’t show up, it stays greyed out!
Solution: Make sure that the spell correction and auto completion are OFF in the Text Settings (Settings > Locale and Text > Touch Input > Text Input then turn off Prediction, spell correction, and word completion) of your phone. If not then it may put in spaces where they do not belong. (I had it put a space after .img and couldn’t see it so couldn’t figure out why it kept saying invalid recovery image, like you guys).
Other than that, just make sure it is on the root of the SD card (not in any folder) and that you are typing in:
    /sdcard/recovery.img
and it should show Flash Recovery
Issue: When I download the FlashRec.apk it shows up as a .zip not an apk.
Solution: No problem. Do NOT extract it, just simply replace the .zip with .apk and then proceed with the procedure.
Issue: I get backup failed or flash failed when I try to use the FlashRec progam.
Solution: This is most likely because you already have a custom recovery image (OR HAVE DONUT), please use one of the unrooting procedures to get back to the original recovery image and THEN you can use this procedure.

    HTC Hero/G2 Touch (GSM)

ATTENTION: We are trying to update this procedure so it works for more versions of the HTC Hero. If you attempt this procedure, or if it has worked for you in the past, PLEASE post what company you have the Hero on (what it is locked to), what your firmware version is, if it worked or not, and what you needed to do to get it to work if it did not, thanks for your help!

    I. Read Before You Begin

    1. Try the procedure as is first, then if you get a backup failed response from flash rec come back to this section for what you need to do BEFORE using the rest of the procedure.
Orange UK Users - Please downgrade your ROM version to 2.73.61.5 using this [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]. Then you can follow the rest of this procedure as it is written. Good luck!
Orange Spain Users – Just continue with the procedure as written, should work fine for you Click here to enlarge
Unbranded European Users - Please downgrade your ROM version to 1.76.405.1 using this [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]. Then you can follow the rest of this procedure as it is written. Good luck!
Sprint Users – Please downgrade your ROM version to 1.29.651.1 using this [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]. Then you can follow the rest of this procedure as it is written. Good luck!
T-Mobile UK Users – Please downgrade your ROM version to 1.76.110.6 using this HTC Program (link is gone, if anyone knows where to find the 1.76.110.6 RUU please post a link). Then you can follow the rest of this procedure as it is written. Good luck!
If None of The Above Worked For You – You may need to do things the hard way (goldcard method), do [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] and then come back and follow the rest of this procedure.
    II. Let’s Get Started

    5. Download this APK and recovery image and save it to your computer:
[Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] (Updated 01.10.10)
    6. IMPORTANT UPDATE: Do NOT follow the video instructions from this point on (use them as a visual aid only!) We have replaced the Cyanogen Recovery Image with the Amon Ra one so when it says anything about the Cyanogen Recovery Image, just ignore that and put the Amon Ra one in it’s place. This is VERY IMPORTANT when typing into the FlashRec program. You will NOT be typing what is written in the video, type what is written here in this procedure instead!
    7. Save both the recovery-RA-heroc-v1.5.2 and the FlashRec.apk to your computer, then copy them both to your SD card (do NOT put them inside any folders on the SD card, just put them on the SD card itself).
    8. Unplug the phone from the computer once they are downloaded to the SD card.
    9. Goto the Market and download Linda File Manager or any file manager program if you do not already have one.
    10. Open the file manager and goto SDCard and then find the FlashRec apk file and click it. If asked tell it to use Package Installer to open it. It should automatically install the apk.
    11. Open the FlashRec program and click on Backup Recovery Image and wait for it to finish.
    12. Once done, click on the empty text box in the FlashRec program and type (again remember we have replaced the recovery image from the one in the video so type what is written here, NOT what is written in the video!):
    /sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-v1.5.2.img
Then click on the Flash Custom Recovery Image button (this button might say something else in different versions of Flashrec, but similar to this) and wait for it to finish.
    13. Turn off the phone and turn it on into Recovery mode by holding down Home and Power to turn it on (keep holding until the recovery screen comes up has a bunch of text on a black background). So long as that screen comes up, you have done it correctly and can now go on to the [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] for your appropriate device!
    14. To get Root access you MUST go to the next video mentioned above and load a custom ROM.
    Reported Issues

Issue: It says Backup Failed/Flash Failed when trying to use the FlashRec program to flash the custom recovery image.
Solution: Try the older version of FlashRec (version 1.1.2).
Issue: When I download the FlashRec.apk it shows up as a .zip not an apk.
Solution: No problem. Do NOT extract it, just simply replace the .zip with .apk and then proceed with the procedure.
Issue: I don’t see the Flash Custom Recovery Image button (or anything similar).
Solution: This means you either are typing in the file name incorrectly or the file is not in the right place on the [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]. This button only shows up when you have the correct path in the text box and everything is spelled correctly.

    Flashing Custom Rom/Radio:
    knWWB9Y9-28">knWWB9Y9-28" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="344">

Before you begin make sure you have done our [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]procedure.
THIS NOW WORKS ON THE SPRINT HERO AS WELL!

After you have successfully done that, you can do this procedure.
    1. Download a ROM from forum.XDA-Developer.com to your computer. Or check our Downloads section and click on [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] then ROMs and use the search bar at the top and type in “Hero ROMs”. *IF YOU HAVE A SPRINT HERO MAKE SURE THE ROM YOU WANT IS COMPATIBLE FOR THE SPRINT HERO!
    2. Plug in your phone and pull down the Notification bar when the SD notification pops up.
    3. Click on the notification and select Mount.
    4. Once the SD card is on your computer screen, copy the ROM from your computer to your SD card (make sure NOT to put it in any folders on the SD card, just on the SD card by itself).
    5. Once it is done copying, rename it on your SD card to update (in windows it should just need to be renamed update and you should still see the Zip folder icon to the left of the file to indicate that it is still update.zip).
    6. Unplug your phone and turn it off.
    7. Turn the phone on by holding down Home and Power till you get to the custom recovery screen.
    8. Select Wipe from the menu, then select Apply Update.zip
    9. Once it is done, select Reboot and you are all set!
    Reported Issue:
    Issue: I can’t find Format Fat32+Ext2+LinuxSwap.
Solution: This means you are using Amon Ras latest recovery image, he has put this option under Partition > Partition SD > then it asks you what values you want for the different partitions. Here are the standard values, but feel free to change them according to what the ROM you wish to use recommends.
    LinuxSwap – 32MBs
    Ext2 – 512Mbs
    Fat32 – Remainder

Step By Step Way to root Using Flashrec(Updated 4/5)
This video I posted is to help people get the custom rom installed which will enable root. This is for people who do not want to go the adb shell way. This method is simpler but will require you to flash a custom ROM onto your phone. You will not have to download the SDK for this method.

*** Use at your own risk. Although i have not come across any one on forums who bricked their phone, there is sill a possibility that this can brick your phone. I take no responsibility if you brick your phone.**

Have tested this on Windows 7 and Windows Xp

Hey everyone, I made a video on this, and some people said I should do a step by step guide, so here goes.

First things first, you are going to need to download these files.

flashrec -- [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]

Amon RA Recover Image 1.6.2 -- [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]
Amon RA Recover Image 1.6.2 Mirror -- [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]

[ROM] MoDaCo 1.1 Custom ROM (has firmware 1.5) -- [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]

    OR

    [ROM] DamageControl v 2.05 (has firmware 2.1) --
    Non-Espresso Version
[Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]

    Espresso Version
[Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]

    OR

[ROM] Fresh Rom 2.0d (has firmware 2.1) --
[Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]

Do not extract the Rom zip file, it needs to stay in the zip.

Ok, lets do this in steps, should make it easier:

Step 1: Mount the sd card and place all the files downloaded onto the root of the sdcard.

Step 2: Download some sort of file manager, ex Estrongs File Manager, and run/open the flashrec apk.

Step 3: Once it's finished installing, unplug the usb cable, run the app, and hit the button, "backup recovery image". If you get an error, try rebooting your phone, make sure the usb cable is unplugged.

Step 4: Exit app, and mount the sd card again, and move recovery-backup.img to your desktop, then rename recovery-RA-heroc-v1.6.2.img to recovery-backup.img

Step 5: Unmount sdcard, unplug usb cable, and go back into the flashrec app(should be named recovery flasher in all programs list)

Step 6: hit restore backup image. Once finished flashing, power down phone.

Step 7: After you power down your phone, hold the Vol Down button, then hold down the power button. Phone should boot into hboot. Press home for recovery.

Step 8: To ensure you have a backup of your phone before we continue, do a nandroid v2.2 backup.

Step 9: After the nandroid backup is complete, you can now choose apply "sd card update choose", and choose the modaco or damage control rom

Step 10: Reboot your phone and you should be all set.

Any issues or anything unclear, let me know and I will try to help make it clear.

I'm going to try to give you the step-by-step procedure.

The first thing you need is to root your tattoo and make it ready to receive the update... It's all over the forum the explanations... You have 2 choices..

1.1. If you want the hard way to do it, but want to learn how to, then follow this links:

1.2. If your just want to chill out, don't understand what your doing, but still want to flash the update, then use this ROOT in 1Click:
[Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]

For both procedures, and for security reasons, don't forget to create a golcard before. That could be your last chance, before you have a beautifull brick...
    ;)
    See here how to:
[Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]

There are two custom recoverys now, using custom recovery from mainfram3 or from maverixx. You will see diferences after pressing power+home buttons. If you see only an android logo then you're with mainfram3 one. If you get some menu choices you're with maverixx one

    With custom recovery from mainfram3

2.1 Lets test the recovery mode :
    • Turn off your tattoo
    • Press power+home buttons, until a nice Android logo image comes up...
    • Hold home and press end button
    • Now there are some options there you can select...
    • Choose "Backup to SDCARD": That will do a complete backup of your system to you sd. (Did you saw "apply sdcard: update.zip" there? ;) )

After this you are ready to go...

    3.1 Apply the update.zip
For the update process, you just need to first put the update.zip in the root of your sd card.
After this it's all the same story...
    • Turn off your tattoo
    • Press power+home buttons, until a nice Android logo image comes up...
    • Hold home and press end button
    • Now choose "apply sdcard: update.zip"
    • Wait.... Wait... Wait...
    • Restart your tattoo, and there you go... :)

At the same menu, and before flashing, you can also wipe your data. Just select it there. ("wipe data/factory reset")

New 1 click recovery from maverixx (18-03-2010)

2.2 Lets test the recovery mode :
    • Turn off your tattoo
    • Press power+home buttons, until a nice Android logo image comes up with somemenus...
    • Choose "Backup/Restore" (With call button)
    • Choose "Nand backup": That will do a complete backup of your system to you sd. (Did you saw "Flash zip from sd card" there? ;) )

After this you are ready to go...

    3.2 Apply the update.zip
For the update process, you just need to first put the update.zip in the root of your sd card.
After this it's all the same story...
    • Turn off your tattoo
    • Press power+home buttons, until a nice Android logo image comes up with some menus...
    • Now choose "Flash zip from sd card" (With call button)
    • Wait.... Wait... Wait...

    III: Flashing a rooted/modded recovery
IV: Flashing a custom ROM (rooted version of leaked 2.1 ROM)

    I: Gaining root
An unlocked hboot will allows us to flash in a modified IMG ROM signed with test keys as supposed to requiring an official ROM from HTC. This will open us to be able to flash a modified recovery.

    1. Download this file: [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] (md5: 63eacc5ede3b179f95dc22d8ef585f94)[Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]
    2.
Place PB00IMG.zip onto the root directory of your sdcard.

    3.
    Power down your phone.

    4.
Hold Volume Down while you Power On. This should bring you to a screen saying "HBOOT" and some other stuff. Wait for it to load the image, and it will say Push Activate. Push the trackball button to continue. The process will take around 5-10 minutes. The first time your phone boots up it will take a lot longer than normal.

II: Prerequisites - Android SDK - These instructions are for Windows XP. You must adapt them to your version of Windows.
First we must install the Android SDK as it has the tools we need for both this walkthrough as well as to make your life in the Android world easier.

    1.
Visit the [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] site.

    2.
Visit the [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] site and download the latest Java JDK.

    3.
Extract the Android SDK zip file unto c:\AndroidSDK\

    4.
    Double click on SDK Setup.exe

    5.
Many times, you will need to click on Settings and check the box to force HTTP instead of HTTPS.

    6.
Choose to download the USB drivers package. Nothing else is required.

    7.
Enable your phone's USB debugging mode: Settings > Applications > Development > check USB Debugging

    8.
Connect your phone via USB to your PC.

    9.
Right-click My Computer > Properties, click on Hardware, and go to Device Manager. You should see a device with a yellow exclamation next to it, this is your phone (if you don't see it you probably forgot to enable USB debugging mode)

    10.
Right-click the device, select Update Driver. Browse to your Android SDK directory, and you should see a "USB Driver" folder in it now. If you don't, you forgot to download the USB Driver package when in "SDK Setup.exe". Select the driver in that folder.

    11.
To make life easier, lets add a global path to the android SDK tools. Right-click My Computer > Properties, click on Advanced, then click on Environment Variables. Doubleclick on PATH, then at the end of the Variable value, add a semi colon ";" and then c:\AndroidSDK\tools

    III: Flashing a Custom Recovery
Flashing a custom recovery will make your life easier when flashing ROMs in the future.

    1. Download this file: [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]
    2. Extract file contents to your \tools\ directory of your Android SDK.

    3. Open up a command prompt and go to your tools directory, and execute these commands:
    • adb shell mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
    • adb push recovery.img /sdcard
    • adb push flash_image /system/bin
    • adb shell chmod 755 /system/bin/flash_image
    • adb shell flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
    4. Success! You now have a recovery partition installed on your phone. You can access it by running "adb shell reboot recovery" or by powering off your phone, holding "Volume Up + Power On"

    IV: Flashing a custom ROM

    1. Download the [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] zip file.

    2. Copy the WHOLE zip file to the root directory of your SD card. (You can enable USB-MS enable from your shiny new recovery to mount your phone as a USB Mass Storage device.)

    3. Choose Wipe. Choose data/factory Reset (In the stock ROM, the dalvik is stored in the data and you don't have an EXT partition... yet.)

    4. Choose Flash zip from sdcard. Find the eris_0_3.zip file.

    5. Wait until it shows as complete and choose reboot system now.

CONGRATULATIONS! You now have a rooted 2.1 phone!

    Watch Video Here:
[Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]

    Before we begin

Make sure you have accomplished the following things
Watch the video walk through once to get a preview of the entire process. Your first time might take you 30 minutes, but it can be completed in less than 10.

    Step 1: Unlock your bootloader

In order to flash a new recovery image, you must unlock your bootloader. This process is quite simple, but it will wipe your phone.
    • Reboot phone into fastboot: Power off device and hold down trackball while powering back on. (The fastboot screen is the one with the Androids on skateboards)
    • Open a command prompt and navigate to your Android SDK tools folder.
    • Type ‘fastboot devices‘ to make sure your phone is recognized.
    • Type ‘fastboot oem unlock‘ to unlock the bootloader.
    • Use volume keys to navigate to yes and press the power button to confirm.
Step 2: Flash a new recovery image

Next we will download a new recovery image that allows us to flash custom zip packages.
    • Visit XDA and download [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] for the Nexus One.
    • Copy the file to your Android SDK tools folder.
    • Open a command prompt and navigate to your Android SDK tools folder.
    • Type ‘fastboot flash recovery recovery-RA-nexus-v1.5.3.img‘. (Note filename will change as recovery image is updated)
Step 3: Boot into recovery mode and flash N1 Addon

Now that the new recovery image is installed, it is time to reboot into recovery mode and flash a custom zip package. Since your phone was just wiped, you might have to enable usb debugging again so ADB and fastboot commands will work.
Double check: Go to Settings > Application settings > Development > USB debugging (enable)
For this guide we will be flashing [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register].
    • Visit XDA and download [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]. (or any other custom .zip file you want to flash)
    • Copy the .zip file to the root directory of your SD card.
    • Open a command prompt and navigate to your Android SDK tools folder.
    • Type ‘adb reboot recovery‘ to reboot the phone into recovery mode. (The recovery screen says “Android system recovery” with green text on black background)
    • Use the trackball to navigate to “Flash zip from sdcard” and then select the zip file you wish to flash.
    • Follow the on screen instructions. Press the trackball to begin the flash when prompted.
    • When the flash is complete, navigate to reboot and press the trackball to reboot.
Congratulations, you are finished and it is now time to download some root apps from the Android Market. Search the Market for SetCPU for Root Users, Nexus One Torch, or use the term “Nexus root” and see what you find.

    HTC Legend (GSM):

Read this whole topic - it contains a ton of useful information as well as the instructions and downloads!

Remember that if you use this guide, you do so entirely at your own risk!!

Welcome to my guide on how to root the HTC Legend!

    Compatibility

This guide will allow you to root your HTC Legend, provided it has a bootloader version of 0.43.xxxx or below and a ROM version of 1.31.xxx.x or below. To check this, turn off your device, then turn it back on with the 'back' key held. On the second line in green text you will see HBOOT- and then a number. Provided this is 0.43 or below, this guide should work for you.

    Legend rooting protection

Back in the early days of Android, rooting was easy. You had several options - you could flash stuff via the bootloader, you could flash an engineering bootloader, you could use kernel exploits - there were many ways of getting the low level access to your device that - in fairness - I think we as paying customers are entitled to. As time has progressed however, the manufacturers have made things harder and harder. The Legend is not a straightforward phone to root, for many reasons, including...
    • a 'perfected bootloader' that doesn't allow flashing or booting of any images (even HTC signed ones)
    • a RUU flash process that does not allow downgrading of the bootloader to earlier versions
    • a kernel (that as yet does not have publicly available source) that as yet has no known exploits
    • a new protection method previously seen on the HTC Tattoo that protects key partitions from having write access. Even with SU access, it is not possible to write to the boot, recovery or system partitions.
In reality, the options for rooting a device this secure are limited. Even if a kernel exploit were found, the key partitions would still be unwritable, rendering su access useless. This was circumvented on the Tattoo very cleverly, using a specific memory address from a confidential Qualcomm datasheet, however this information is not yet available for the MSM7227 chipset used in the Legend (and indeed may never enter the public domain).

And so the root process becomes a process of methodically probing every possible point of exposure on the device, looking for the slightest chink in the armour. I found one and we're putting it to good use! The downside is that it's not as easy or as pretty as rooting a device that is actually DESIGNED to be accessible at the lowest level, such as the Nexus One.

Shame on you HTC for going to such unnecessary lengths (but that's another story for another day).

What this root process provides and does not provide

    The root process will...
    • flash your device with a new, generic 1.31 series based ROM that has Superuser access
    • show you how to enter the recovery image in future, allowing you to flash update zips
    The root process will NOT...
    • enable you to flash your device with a custom recovery image that can be launched easily by just holding down the volume down button when powering on
    • enable you to have write access to the /system partition in normal use of the device
Both of these limitations are being worked on of course. Click here to enlarge

    Pre-requisites

In order to complete this guide, you need the following...
    • a HTC Legend Click here to enlarge
    • a computer running Windows (32 bit recommended, some users have reported issues with x64), OSX or Linux
    • a microUSB cable
    • a microSD card (to be made into a 'goldcard')
    • the download below
    • balls of steel (actually, I just made that up) Click here to enlarge
    Download

To be ready for the guide, download the following items...Once you have this on your machine, you're ready to start! Click here to enlarge

Note: If you require the previous 'TinyCoreLinux' r3 build, you can download it [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] (MediaFire), [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] (ROMraid / CoBlitz) or [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] (ROMraid / Coral).

    The guide

Follow through these steps, one by one and at the end of it you'll have a rooted Legend with the latest ROM.

Note: This process will wipe your device and there is currently no option to backup your device ROM before you start.
    • Make your microSD card into a goldcard by following [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] (it's a good idea to back up the contents of your card first!).
    • Unzip the file you downloaded to a directory, then open a command prompt / terminal window at that directory.
    • Turn off your HTC Legend, then turn it back on with the 'back' button held down. You'll see 'FASTBOOT' written on the screen in a red box. Connect the phone to the computer.
    • In the terminal window, enter either 'step1-windows.bat', './step1-mac.sh' or './step1-linux.sh' as appropriate.
    • When this step has completed, navigate to the 'BOOTLOADER' and then 'RECOVERY' option on the menu, using the volume buttons to move and the power button to select.
    • In the terminal window, enter either 'step2-windows.bat', './step2-mac.sh' or './step2-linux.sh' as appropriate.
    • When this has completed, your device should be at the 'recovery' screen. Select the 'wipe' option, then select the option to apply an update zip from sdcard, and select 'rootedupdate.zip'. This will take a little while, so go make a nice cup of tea. When the flash has finished, reboot, and you are DONE! Click here to enlarge

Follow through these steps, one by one and at the end of it you'll have a rooted Desire with the latest ROM.

Note: This process will wipe your device and there is currently no option to backup your device ROM before you start.
    • Make your microSD card into a goldcard by following [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] instructions (it's a good idea to back up the contents of your card first!)
    • Copy the 'rooted update' you downloaded above to the root of your SD card, before replacing it into your device.
    • Turn off your HTC desire, then turn it back on with the 'back' button held down. You'll see 'FASTBOOT' written on the screen in a red box.
    • Connect the phone to your computer, then run the 'test ruu' that you downloaded above (it may take a short while to start). Let the update complete and turn your device off as soon as it reaches the configuration wizard. If you need USB drivers, you can find them as part of the [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register].
    • Your device should now be off. Unplug the device from your computer. Turn it on again while holding down the 'volume down' button this time. The screen will look similar to before, but will say 'HBOOT' instead of 'FASTBOOT'. Use the volume buttons and the power button to select the 'RECOVERY' option. You should then see a screen with a red triangle - at this point, plug it into your Linux or OSX computer.
    • Now you need to unzip the 'push files' zip that you downloaded above. When you have done so, you'll see a file called 'recovery-linux.sh' or 'recovery-mac.sh'. Run the one appropriate to your operating system and the screen of your device should change to display the green recovery image menu.
    • In the recovery image (moving around using the optical trackball), select 'Wipe -> Wipe data /factory reset' then 'Flash zip from sdcard' and choose the rooted update. Confirm with the trackball and the update process will begin. It'll take a little while, so go make a nice cup of tea.
    • When the flash has finished, reboot, and you are DONE!

Motorola Droid Root And Flash (CDMA)

Someone over at AllAndroid has created a .zip file exploit which can allow you to use SU (root access) through ADB on the Droid. Now this is NOT going to load any custom ROMs just yet, BUT it is the first step (and the hardest one mind you) so if you are a developer, enjoy! For the rest of us, I’d wait until there is something to do with the new rooting ability (or until we have a custom recovery image etc.) and just know for now that it has been done! Click here to enlarge
    I. Gain Root Access through ADB using the Droid-Root.zip Exploit:

    1. [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] the Droid-Root.zip below:
[Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]
    2. Rename the Droid-Root zip file to update (please make sure the full name in the properties when right clicking the file is update.zip or that it is update and is a .zip file type).
    3. Save it to the root of you SD card (not in any folder, just on the SD card itself).
    4. Turn off the Droid.
    5. Turn the Droid back on by holding down power and the X key on the physical keyboard until the /!\ screen comes up.
    6. When you do push Volume Up and Camera till the menu comes up.
    7. Select Apply Update.zip using the physical keyboard and let it install.
    8. Reboot when done.
II. Flash a Recovery Image and Add BusyBox

    1. Download the following file:
[Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] (Updated 01/07/10)
    2. Unzip the file.
    3. Plug your phone in to the computer via USB. Pull down the notification bar and click Mount to mount the SD card.
    4. Copy the Tools folder from the [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] to the root of your SD card (do not put it inside any other folders, just put it on the SD card).
    5. Unplug the phone from the computer when the folder has been copied over.
    6. Open the Market on the phone and download Linda [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] (if you don’t already have it).
    7. Open Linda File Manager and navigate to the Tools folder we just copied to the SD card.
    8. Click on the DroidRootHelper.apk and install it using the Package installer. (If it tells you to goto Settings, go and check the box to allow non market apps).
    9. Open DroidRootHelper once it is installed and click on the following in this order:
    Mount System
    Rename Recovery
    Install BusyBox
    Install Flash Image
    Flash SirPsycoS’s .12.0 recovery
    Reboot Recovery
III. Setup USB Drivers and SDK (OPTIONAL)

    1. Use our [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] then once you can see your phone’s serial number in ADB come back to this procedure.
All set! You have root access and a custom Recovery Image.
Next step is to load a custom ROM.

    cd /system/bin
cat btld_testmode > ../btld_testmode (this backs up the file)
cat sh >> btld_testmode (we append it first, don't know why, but we cant just overwrite it at first)
cat sh > btld_testmode (overwrite it)

Now, it lost is setuid. but that is fine, the factorytest.rc will restore it. so reboot the phone, reloading .

    cd /system/bin
    ./btld_testmode
Now you are in a root shell, you know what to do
    cat sh > su
    chmod 4755 su
    exit
    ./su

Now we will put btld_testmode back.

    cat ../btld_testmode > btld_testmode
    chmod 6777 btld_testmode

Currently the su looses it's setuid on reboot, so it is not permanent.
    Still working on that.

Edit: it seems all permissions get reset, then are set up by the init script.
Sadly, we can't overwrite the init script because changes in / do not persist.
All we can use this for is flashing, unless we find another way to persist our setuid...

    unrevoked forever radio S-OFF tool

unrevoked forever is a tool to set your Android phone's security level to S-OFF. The security level is a flag stored on the radio; when the flag is S-OFF, the bootloader (HBOOT) will no longer check the signatures of firmware images before flashing them. This allows custom firmware images to be uploaded, including unsigned boot, recovery, splash1, and hboot images (as well as official images that have been modified). When the system is S-OFF, the NAND flash memory protection is also reduced; this allows all partitions (including /system) to be written to while the operating system is booted.

The most substantial benefit of unrevoked forever is that the change is stored in the radio's NV memory; no ENG bootloader is necessary to continue to flash firmware images. Even if an “unrootable” OTA update is accepted, a device on which unrevoked forever has been run will still be able to reflash a custom recovery image.

    Important Safety Information

We know you just want to install unrevoked forever. However, before you do, please read this section in its entirety. It contains important information to avoid bricking your phone.

We believe unrevoked forever to be safe for your phone. However, forever unlocks a few capabilities that make it substantially easier to cause (in some cases, permanent) damage. Here are a list of things to be aware of:

As with all hacks to your phone's firmware, setting your phone S-OFF will void the warranty on your phone. Do not take your phone in for support until you have set your phone S-ON and removed all custom modifications. Damaging your phone by flashing a custom bootloader, or other unusual combinations of firmware, is not covered under warranty; although your carrier may not check to see if your phone was modified, please be honest.
unrevoked forever allows you, among other things, to reflash the hboot partition on your phone. Doing so carries risk; a bad hboot flash can render the phone permanently unusable. Be cautious about where you accept updates from.
When doing updates, be sure to flash all partitions at the same time. For instance, on Incredible, running a 0.92 hboot and a 2.15 radio with a 2.6.29 Linux kernel will result in the system becoming unusable until reflashed.
When updating using an official OTA, update using an official recovery. See below for instructions.
unrevoked forever comes with NO WARRANTY (express or implied), and NO GUARANTEE OF FITNESS for any particular task. Although we have attempted to minimize the risk the best we can, the authors do not disclaim any chance of damage to your phone. The entire risk of running unrevoked forever lies with you, the user.

    Supported Devices

At this time, the following devices are supported.

HTC Droid Incredible, running radio baseband versions:
    1.00.03.04.06
    2.05.00.06.11
    2.07.00.07.16
    2.15.00.07.28
HTC EVO 4G, running radio baseband versions:
    1.39.00.04.26
    2.05.00.06.10
    2.15.00.07.28
You can determine your radio baseband version by holding the VOLUME DOWN key while powering on the phone.

We believe the mechanism behind unrevoked forever may work for other radios and devices, and will add support as radio images are made available to us.

    Installation Instructions

To install unrevoked forever on your phone, perform the following steps.

If your phone does not already have a custom recovery, [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register].
The installation process cannot take place if the phone does not have a custom recovery installed.
Download the [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] to a temporary location on your computer.
The update can be installed like any custom .zip file. Simply flash it from your custom recovery. Both Amon_RA and Clockworkmod Recoveries support custom .zip installs from the sdcard.
Either select the option to install a .zip from your SD card, or apply it as an update.zip as follows:
Place the update.zip file into the root of your SD card. You can do this with adb with the command: adb push unrevoked-forever.zip /sdcard/update.zip
Reboot your phone into recovery mode. You can do this by removing your phone's battery, holding down the VOLUME DOWN button, and inserting the battery; at the menu, press VOLUME DOWN to highlight recovery, then press POWER to select it.

Did you read the important safety information above?
    Do so now before continuing.

Select apply sdcard:update.zip from the menu.
Press VOLUME DOWN until Yes is highlighted, then select it.
Review the output to determine if there were any errors.
If messages beginning in E: appear, stop! If possible, join IRC for support.
Restart the phone normally, then reboot the phone into the bootloader. This can be done by holding VOLUME DOWN while powering the system up. Observe at the top that S-OFF appears.
Optional, but recommended: show your support (and your S-OFF bootloader) by [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]!

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an ENG bootloader and unrevoked forever? Are there any disadvantages?
This is a permanent patch; unrevoked forever works below the radio level. Thus, even if an update removes the ENG bootloader, a device that has run forever will remain S-OFF. It is possible for HTC to produce an update to remove this, but a carrier that distributes such an update would also break legitimate test phones, reverting them back to “release” phones.

For Droid Incredible users, this is the only way to obtain S-OFF access. However, the EVO 4G's ENG bootloader allows certain extended fastboot commands to be used. Currently, unrevoked forever does not enable these extended commands; however, the ENG bootloader can be used in conjunction with unrevoked forever to have permanent S-OFF access as well as access to the extended commands. For HTC Incredible users, our intent is to eventually bring our own ENG patched HBOOT to the Incredible.

How can this be removed or undone if I need to take my phone in for service?
We have not yet developed a tool to reset the phone to S-ON. In the future, we may create one; in the interim, you should not rely on the existence of such a tool.

How can I use S-OFF to recover from an unrooted update?
S-OFF gives your device permanent NAND unlock in the booted system, and also disables HBOOT's signature checking on firmware zip files. So, even if you take a OTA that has not been rooted, you can simply flash a new recovery that allows you to install su, and use that to restore yourself to a fully rooted system. We have provided [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] images for you to use for this purpose.

How do I create a unsigned zip to flash in HBOOT?
Download one of the example zip files (either the [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] or the [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] zip files) appropriate for your platform, and extract the android-info.txt file from it. Zip the file that you wish to flash (usually named something like BOOT.IMG, SPLASH1.NB0, RECOVERY.IMG, …) up along with an appropriate android-info.txt into a file named either PB31IMG.ZIP (for Incredible) or PC36IMG.ZIP (for Evo), and place this file on the root of your SD card. Power the phone up while holding the VOLUME DOWN button, choose HBOOT, and press VOLUME UP when prompted to flash the image. Be careful – in this state, the phone will not prevent you from doing dumb things like flashing an invalid HBOOT!

When I try to get into Fastboot by pressing VOLUME UP and booting the phone, my phone instead buzzes three times and acts dead. What happened?
The S-OFF update also enables Qualcomm Diagnostics mode on your phone, which is entered by doing what you just did. You can exit this mode (and boot normally) by removing the battery and USB cable.

Will you release the source code?
At this time, we are not disclosing the vulnerability we have exploited to set the phone S-OFF.

That doesn't seem fair! Android is about open source.
In some senses, we agree; but at times, a tradeoff needs to be made. Releasing the source code for this, we believe, would compromise the greater ability to unlock devices like these in the future. Given the choice between sacrificing the liberty of running code on our handsets and the liberty of reading the code by which we unlock it, we feel that the millions of handsets are more important. It is unfortunate that we must make such a choice, and we look forward to the day in the future that no such decision need be made.

I found this software useful, and I would like to donate to the team!
Thank you for your support. At this time, the team behind unrevoked3 does not accept donations; but we highly encourage our users to [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]. The EFF performs the important role of standing up for our digital liberties, including the liberties to reverse-engineer devices that we own. If you are able, please consider making a contribution to them so that they can continue to perform this valuable service.

    Custom Splash

If, like us, you are excited about having a phone that is all yours, you can flash a custom splash screen with our logo. To do so:

Install unrevoked forever on your phone.
Download either [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] or [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register].
Place the appropriate file – with that exact file name! – on the root of your SD card.
Reboot your device into HBOOT by removing the battery, pressing VOLUME DOWN, inserting the battery, and pressing POWER.
When prompted Do you want to start update?, press VOLUME UP for Yes. When prompted again Do you want to reboot device?, press VOLUME UP for Yes.
Congratulations! Your phone now has a sweet unrevoked splash screen.

    Reinstalling an official recovery

If you wish to install a stock over-the-air update in the future (OTA), the safest way to do so is to install the recovery that originally shipped with your phone. To install an OTA:

Install unrevoked forever on your phone.
Download or create an appropriate PB31IMG.ZIP or PC36IMG.ZIP for your phone that contains the original recovery image.
We do not supply these images; since the recovery code is owned by HTC, we don't distribute it. You may be able to find these images on the XDA-Developers forums.
From the phone operating system, install the over-the-air update.
When the update is done installing, you will probably want to root it with a custom recovery. Download one of the following recovery restore images:
[Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]
    ClockworkMod recovery for EVO 4G
    ClockworkMod recovery for Incredible
Place the appropriate file – with that exact file name! – on the root of your SD card.
Reboot your device into HBOOT by removing the battery, pressing VOLUME DOWN, inserting the battery, and pressing POWER.
When prompted Do you want to start update?, press VOLUME UP for Yes. When prompted again Do you want to reboot device?, press VOLUME UP for Yes.
Your phone now has a custom recovery. To restore superuser access to your phone, you can apply any appropriate update.zip; such a file can likely be found on the XDA-Developers forums.

After hours of trying to figure out a way to make Mast3rpyr0's batch files work correctly, I noticed it had problems sending certain commands. So I decided to use some of his batch file codes, and create a VB.NET application along with batch files. I have unrooted and rooted my personal phone multiple times trying to get this to work. I tested the app 3times!! Each time Unrooting my phone! All three times its has been successful!

    What exactly does this do?
Exactly what it say, Root your EVO in 3 Steps.

    How do you use it?
Make sure your phone is on USB Debug mode. (MENU > Settings > Applications > Developement > USB debugging = Checked ) Click the buttons starting from Step 1.
FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS!! IF IT SAYS DONT MOVE YOUR MOUSE, DONT CLICK ANYTHING, DONT TOUCH YOUR KEYBOARD... THEN DONT!!!!
The reason for this is because for some reason a batch file cant send the command

    Code:
    adb shell cat sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
The only way I found to get around that was using [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]. I know, send keys is lame, and poor programming, but its the only way that I could get this to work.
Basically, Sendkeys sends keystokes to a targeted window, as if you were typing. You might see your keyboard NumLock, Caps light blink while this is being used, which is perfectly normal. (Enjoy the light show)

    Why the large file size?
This includes all the .img and .zip files that are needed to root. (2 PC36IMG.zip @ ~ 170MB = 340mb) and a couple of other smaller files. I decided to add them to make things more simple and avoid having to explain where to get these files.

Note: One error that make occur, might be with for-root.exe. This file is basically a copy of cmd.exe, but a x64 edition. I haven't been able to test this on a 32bit system, as I don't have one. If you're on 32bit, you might get a for-root.exe error. If you do, find cmd.exe ,copy and paste it into the same directory where the Simple Root app is located and rename it for-root.exe

The Evo 4G was rooted some days ago, and we finally have instructions. And it couldn't be easier. If you're new to this, we suggest you read through the thread at XDA Developers. And then read through it again. And after you think you don't have any more questions, read through it one more time. (Note: THIS WILL WIPE YOUR PHONE.) For the advanced, it's this simple:

    1. Download this file ([Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]). Move it to the root (as in top level) of the Evo's storage card.

    2. Turn the phone off. Once it is, hold down the volume button and the power button until you get a white screen and some text. You're now in the bootloader. It should automatically start checking the PC36IMG.zip file you put on the card.

    3. Once it's done, it'll list all the images on the card and ask if you want to flash. (This is your last chance to back out.) Say yes, and we're on our way. It'll look like this as it's going:

    Evo 4G rooting

    4. After it's done, it'll ask if you want to reboot. Surely.

That's it. You have a rooted ROM. You'll want to rename (or delete) the PC36IMG.zip image file that you put on the card, so that next time you enter the bootloader it won't try to automatically update again. You can do that by plugging in the phone, choosing "HTC Sync" and going to your favorite command line prompt and typing:

    adb shell mv /sdcard/PC36IMG.zip /sdcard/root-PC36IMG.zip

Leave the phone plugged in if you want to go on to the next section and load the custom recovery. (After the break, for cleanliness.) Otherwise, you're done.
    Flashing recovery for custom ROMs

If you're going to want custom ROMs on the Evo, you need to flash the recovery image. Here's how you do that.

    1. Download this file ([Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]) to your desktop (or wherever). Then unzip it.

    2. Return to your favorite command line prompt and type "adb reboot recovery" (without quotes). This will reboot the phone into recovery mode. It looks like this:

    Evo 4G stock recovery

    3. Once it's in recovery mode, go back to your computer. Find the evo-recovery file that you unzipped. Inside are a series of files. For Windows, double-click "recovery-windows.bat." (If you're running Windows Vista or Windows 7, right-click it first and choose "Run as administrator." Let it do it's thing, and you'll now have the custom recovery module so you can back up the phone, flash custom ROMs, etc.

    Evo 4G custom recovery

That's it, everybody. Huge props to the folks at XDA and everybody who worked on this project. Once you're done here, head on over there and let them know how awesome they are.

    adb push /path/to/flash_image /sdcard/flash_image
    adb push /path/to/mtd-eng.img /sdcard/mtd-eng.img

or try to mount the card: (*note, this command only works from recovery. If you are inside the android OS you have to use adb remount. This is also how you test system r/w access, which is what this whole process gives you

Can I delete these files from my sdcard, now that I have finished?
    Answer:
Sure. Alternatively, you can just throw them into a folder named whatever you want (example folder name: "files for rooting") and leave them there in case you need the later! Totally up to you, but yes they are safe to remove.

    Question:

Do I have to backup/restore my nandroid? Can't I just flash a new ROM?
    Answer:
Yep. The advantage of restoring your nandroid is I believe you get your radio back. Maybe not. It takes like 3 seconds to restore your radio anyway. I just flashed my ROM back over clean and used Titanium Backup which I strongly recommend to restore all my apps.

Im trying to work on getting a VPS to host the files for this. My host suspended my account due "CPU Usage" abuse lol. The amount of downloads were cause the CPU over usage... So getting a VPS should solve that problem, but it's more costly... so dropbox and megaupload will have to do for now....

ROOT FOR 2.2 (more of ability to downgrade to 2.1 than root)
The rooting method for the EVO 4G is close to the same as the Droid 2, just recently created by Sebastian Krahmer at [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register], but with a little variation.

Here is the step-by-step I just did on my brother's (dwizzy130) EVO 4G that came with 2.2 from Sprint. More in-depth guide tomorrow afternoon/evening. I'm sleeping in after this one haha.

I am NOT responsible for any damages (bricking, not working, basically anything that goes wrong) This has been tested and works. Over the next few days, I will be cleaning this post up and making the steps more clear.

    Special thanks to:
    Sebastian Krahmer for the exploit
dwizzy130 (my brother) for letting me test on his EVO (since I don't have one)
The unrevoked team for their methods ;)
    Toastcfh for his mtd-eng.img
Topgun966 over at [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] for hosting the files
I'll add plenty more thanks tomorrow. This is off the top of my almost asleep head.

Make sure your phone is unplugged from your computer until I tell you to plug it in!
If you already have the Android SDK and HTC Sync set up on your computer, skip to Step 4 now

Step 1: Download the Android SDK [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]

Step 2: Extract the Android SDK zip. Move the contents of the extracted zip to C:\
Your Android tools folder path should now be C:\android-sdk-windows\tools

Step 3: Download HTC Sync 2.0.40 [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]
Run the installer. Move on once installed. If reboot is required, do so and then move on.

Download my [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register].

It contains a few files necessary to root the EVO.
Unzip the contents of the zip to your android sdk tools folder.

Download the [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]

Place this zip in your tools folder as well, as a zip, not extracted.

Download this [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] (This is the same as running an RUU, so it will delete all of your user data when we use it later in the guide, so backup everything you want to save on your phone first)

Put this zip in your sdk tools folder as well, as a zip, not extracted.

After unzipping the contents of evo-root.zip to your android sdk tools folder and placing the PC36IMG.zip and unrevoked-forever.zip in the folder, move on.

Step 4: Make sure USB Debugging is ON (checked) on your EVO. Go to Settings > Applications > Development > and make sure it is checked.

Step 5: Plug your phone into the computer via USB, Make sure that the connection type in the Notification Pull-Down Bar is "Charge Only", not "Disk Drive" or else this won't work.
If your computer asks you to restart after the new drivers were installed, do that now.

Once ready, type these commands in cmd prompt from your adb tools directory.

    Code:
    adb push unrevoked-forever.zip /sdcard/
    adb push flash_image /data/local/
    adb push rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin /data/local/tmp/
    adb push mtd-eng.img /sdcard/
    adb push PC36IMG.zip /sdcard/
Note: the PC36IMG.zip will take longer than expected to transfer to the sdcard. It is a BIG file.

Now we chmod a few things

    Code:
    adb shell
    chmod 0755 /data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
    chmod 0755 /data/local/flash_image
Ok now for the root shell.

On your phone, go to Settings > Wireless & Networks
After you do these next 2 commands, start toggling Airplane Mode over and over until you acheive the desired results mention in a few steps.

    *
    (still in adb shell)

    Code:
    cd /data/local/tmp
    Code:
    ./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
(This is where you start toggling airplane mode)

You will now see some text on your cmd prompt screen explaining the exploit.

Wait for the adb shell to go away, and it will dump you into your windows command prompt again (no shell) should look something like this:

    C:\android-sdk-windows\tools>

If it dumps you to a $ instead, repeat those 2 commands again, toggling airplane mode again.

Once that dumps you out of the shell, type

    Code:
    adb shell
and you will see you now have a
    Code:
    #
    instead of
    Code:
    $
    now type

    Code:
    cd /data/local
    ./flash_image misc /sdcard/mtd-eng.img
that will flash your misc partition with Toast's mtd-eng.img.

This should return you to a blank line with #.

If you get an "Out of memory error" with a huge list of weird lines, here's how to fix it.

    Reboot your phone normally.
Open a command prompt and go backwards in this guide until you see the big red * and start from there.

Once it is flashed correctly, move on:

    Type
    Code:
    reboot bootloader
Remember how you pushed that huge PC36IMG.zip to your sdcard earlier? This is where that comes in handy. Once you booted into hboot, Select "bootloader" with your volume up/down buttons and hit the power button. Let it sit for a little bit while it loads the PC36IMG.zip. This can take up to 5 minutes. When it finally asks if you want to apply this zip, choose YES. (Remember, this is the same as running an RUU, so it will delete all of your user data).

Once it is finished, select restart. You now are on the stock 2.1 build of Android.

Next step, mount your sdcard on your computer, and delete the PC36IMG.zip from it. This is because the next step requires using hboot, and you don't want to sit and wait while it loads up again, just for you to say "no" to the install. Please follow this step, for it saves 5-10 minutes of waiting ahead.

I worked extensively with Matt Mastracci, so this rooting guide will use the unrevoked method to root 2.1. This is what worked for me testing on my brother's EVO, so if you do end up trying something else to root 2.1 with, PLEASE do not post it here or ask questions, for I will only support the unrevoked team.

Now open up your web browser on your computer and navigate to [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]

Click on the little EVO picture, and then on unrevoked3. Go [Only the registered members can see the link click here to register] for more info on unrevoked3.
Choose the correct operating system to download for. Once downloaded, run the program on your computer. Make sure your EVO is plugged in with USB DEBUGGING ON! Do not touch your phone while this process is going. It will reboot to the bootloader, and pause for a little while and then do some reboots.

As soon as it is booted into recovery, you are done with that.

    Next in recovery go to

    Code:
    Flash zip from sdcard
    and choose the
    Code:
     unrevoked-forever.zip
This will flash the unrevoked forever hboot unlock. You are now completely rooted. You can now reboot to recovery and flash a custom rom, or reboot into the rom and accept the OTA update. Even if you accept the OTA update, you will still have the s-off flag from unrevoked forever, so you can flash a custom recovery from the bootloader using
    Code:
     fastboot flash recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
assuming that you are booted in the bootloader and have the recovery image on your sdcard as recovery.img.

I am sorry if this is a little confusing, but I had to get this out tonight. I will update this as best as I can tomorrow. Thanks again for all of your patience tonight!

While this method is now public, we are working on other methods still, but this will be useful to folks in the meantime. While we still do not understand the first adbd race entirely, we do know that there are some key differences in system timing seemingly from sdcard (mmc1), wifi (uses mmc0), and emmc (uses mmc2). If frustrated you may try doing things to change your setup.

    Instructions here:

[Only the registered members can see the link click here to register]

    Advanced instructions:
    Code:

    <6>[ 5.326202] mmc1: Slot status change detected (0 -> 1)
...Bluetooth and wifi begin to load...
<6>[ 5.481384] mmc1: new high speed SD card at address ff0e
<6>[ 5.490112] warning: `adbd' uses 32-bit capabilities (legacy support in use)
    <6>[ 5.491027] mmcblk1: mmc1:ff0e SD02G 1.83 GiB
That is what a good dmesg will look like. please do a dmesg in android (not recovery) and see where you find those similar strings in yours. notice the numbers, 5.49 seconds is when adbd started roughly, a sd read was toggled at about the same time as you see, this means you win! Please look at yours and calculate how long a delay your sd card needs... then reseat it and try to hit that window...

NOTE: SD card choice seems to be a important factor in whether you get adb in recovery, in general the slower and crummier the card, the better.

The key is getting adb working in recovery. There is as of yet no easy way. reboot recovery, or reboot bootloader and go into recovery. try try try again...

To explain the method a little, there are 2 races here. It would be wise not to update any further if you get this, as they will most certain plug both our holes here. But in general the first race is in recoveries starting. It starts adbd, but also stops it. If for whatever reason the start takes longer than the stop, we win. The second race should be obvious looking at the instructions, but in short it verifies the real OTA update, while we swap it with a special one...

It does everything from downloading the needed files and placing them in the correct location (you do need to install SDK + sync yourself) to having eash step very obviously labeled on the app screen.

One Click Root for AT&T Captivate

    Team,

This One-Click Root process will copy over the rooted-update.zip file then reboot your phone. Follow the instructions in the CMD prompt that launches.
It launches minimized right now. I will fix it later I'm in a hurry. But just click on the minimized CMD shell to restore it .

LeshaK at Samdroid: for the original rooted-update.zip.

This has been tested on stock Android 2.1 Eclair only.

This is work in progress, look for un-root button to be added soon.

    Download the app here.

Warning: I am not responsible for bricked phones, rooting can void your warranty....

Requirements: Dot Net Framework version 4

    1. Make sure your phone is on USB Debug mode: (MENU > Settings > Applications > Developement > USB debugging = Checked )

    2. For Windows x86 and x64 systems make sure that the Samsung Drivers are installed. You can get them here.

    3. Extract the contents of GalaxyS_One-Click_Root.rar to a folder.

    4. Connect your phone to your PC via the USB cable and launch the file "Galaxy S One-Click Root.exe" file.

    5. Click the "One-Click Root" button. This will launch a command shell. If it launched minimized click on the CMD window to restore it to your view and follow the instructions in the CMD window.

    Done! You are rooted.

Now you can load Clockwork Mod custom recovery on your phone:

    - cd c:/wherever-your-sdk-tools-folder-is
    - adb devices (to verify the connection)
    - cd c:/Droid2Root
    - adb push Superuser.apk /sdcard/Superuser.apk
    - adb push su /sdcard/su
    - adb push busybox /sdcard/busybox
    - adb push rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin /data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
    - adb shell
    - cd data/local/tmp
    - chmod 0755 rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin

    - ./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin
    - let the process run until it 'kicks' you out (may take a minute or two)
    - cd c:/wherever-your-sdk-tools-folder-is
    - adb devices (to verify the connection)
    - adb shell (you should now have a # prompt, if not return to ./rage step above)

    - mount -o rw,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
    - cp /sdcard/Superuser.apk /system/app/Superuser.apk
    - cp /sdcard/su /system/bin/su
    - cp /sdcard/busybox /system/bin/busybox
    - chmod 4755 /system/bin/su
    - chmod 4755 /system/bin/busybox
    - mount -o ro,remount -t ext3 /dev/block/mmcblk1p21 /system
    - exit
    - exit

I'm sure there are certain steps that could be streamlined or eliminated, so please feel free to make a suggestion and I'll edit the post.
